It was the shot heard ’round the world. Selena Quintanilla-Perez was shot and killed by her fan club President, Yolanda Saldivar on March 31, 1995 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Selena’s death was a crushing blow to music industry, as she was in the studio working her first english crossover album, Dreaming of You, which was later released posthumously. Not only that, but Tejano music waned in popularity following the tragedy.
Now 20 years after her tragic death, Selena is back with new music and a tour on the way.
The project, titled Selena the One, is a “walking, talking, singing, and dancing, digital embodiment,” according to an article on Billboard.com. The plans of this project include new music, collaborations with current artists, as well as a tour in 2018. It is an IndieGoGo Campaign by Acrovirt LLC, in collaboration with the Quintanilla Family.
The campaign launches on April 16, which would’ve been Selena’s 44th birthday. Acrovirt LLC aims to raise 500k for the project. Social media pages and websites have already been created to raise awareness and spread the word about the campaign.
The project has made headlines all across social media, especially on Facebook and Twitter. Some fans are excited and hopeful for this to become a reality, while others express confusion or dislike for the project. I, for one, am pretty excited about it. As a fan of Selena’s, I think it’s pretty cool that the family is in support of this project. It’s a great way for a new generation of people to learn about her and her music.
