Selfies have brought everyone in the world to enjoy being in front of the camera with the purpose to not just entertain, but to enhance perspectives–at least, that is to be believed. For a person who also likes to take or look at selfies from time to time, I found out some major ironies to the art of taking a selfie.
‘Selfie’ as in ‘self’ right?
Depicting yourself, who ‘you’ are in a photograph without using someone else’s eyes but your own means you get to expose yourself in it. Well don’t think that’s what happens when you take a selfie. Perhaps with all help of all the Photoshop apps that allow you to remove your ‘flaws’( because that’s what they are to you) and produce an image that is a picture perfect ‘you’, people as well as yourself might be satisfied with what they see, but it’s not your ‘self’ that is being depicted there. It’s an alteration of your self that you convey without knowing just how perfect you are.
“Selfie” as in for oneself?
When the whole concept of a selfie was introduced, it was with a sigh that I realized I had to get to know myself a little bit more. Never being the one in front of the camera but rather behind it, it was a good thing to know that I can just turn my phone camera and take a photo of myself so see how much I changed throughout life and remind me of myself. But that is not what’s taking place, is it?
Your selfie is posted all over the place for everyone to see. With the photoshopped background, and a face to envy, some set the bar high for who is viewing the picture. It showcases a vulnerable side of you, a side you wouldn’t normally show everyone, yet you display it without even realizing. We don’t realize that we are taking these pictures to be seen for other people’s benefits, not to look at yourself for you.
It is a concept that has taken the world by storm, and it is something that is here to stay. So use it for your advantage and look at yourself without a critiques eye. Be proud of who you are and don’t feel the need to change everything about you in the picture because you are beautiful just the way you are.
