More than a handful of soccer players around the world are decorated with ink, some with so many that they have become famous for them (i.e. David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic). Many assume that the ever so good-looking Portuguese Real Madrid star, FIFA Ballon d’Or honoree and UEFA Champions League winner Cristiano Ronaldo would have gotten a little commemorative tattoo to honor his achievements, or to show off on his sculpted body for his Russian supermodel girlfriend. Why hasn’t he?
“I don’t have tattoos because I donate blood very often,” Ronaldo answers. He donates blood twice a year for efforts to help children overcome debilitating diseases. Getting a tattoo would halt those efforts because of the heightened risks of cross-contamination and hepatitis, so he doesn’t get them. There are people who admonish Ronaldo for his egotism and his irrepressible pride that spreads like wildfire across the field, but we don’t see those people donating blood the same way he does.
Ronaldo added that he became a bone marrow donor because of fellow teammate Carlos Martins’ son’s situation.
“He told us about the problem with his son and we, the players, showed great unity to help him and his son because we knew it was a very complicated situation and is something a lot of people think is a difficult thing to do, but it’s nothing more than drawing blood and doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t cost anything” he explains. “It’s a simple process and then you feel happy because you know you are helping another person.” Blood donation still is safe for those who want to donate blood, but those who get tattoos need to make sure they get theirs done in a sterilized, licensed environment. There also can’t be any scarring on the tattoos, and there will be extra steps to make sure that the blood that is being given is safe, but for the most part people with or without inked skin are eligible to donate.
As for Ronaldo, he knows that giving your all means putting in your blood, sweat, and tears. It’s not just for the sake of being a winner, it’s for the sake of feeling accomplished by helping others and showing true team spirit, while helping others. And he still looks sexy as hell while doing it.
